MUTTOM MEDICAL COLLEGE
location: Muttom
Super built-up area: 2.7Lakh+ sq. ft
Muttom medical college , currently named KMMC is an under construction medical college campus spread across 40 acres in the coastal village of Muttom, Kanyakumari district. Its situated on an uneven terrain which primarily consists of loose red earth which is powdery during summer and erosion prone during rainy weather
.The first challenge during construction was encountered during the surveying stage of the land. The land being in a sloppy terrain was filled with numerous water run-off sections which had developed into a network of several fissures along the entire area. Surveyors had to carefully navigate through those to take the levelling of the ground. Then came the cutting and filling of the removed earth. A massive work was undertaken to remove thousands of cubic meters of red earth and level the ground as per the planned topographic sketch.
During those stage hundreds of meters of R.C.C retaining wall had to be constructed to prevent the land from adjacent plots along the periphery of the campus from collapsing. The depth of such walls reached 25 feet at certain places. As such RCC drainage was also constructed to divert the run-off water into massive Sumps which could then be reused.
During the construction of the buildings soil testing results showed poor quality of soil and also the depth of the stable ground varied for individual blocks. This warranted the construction of a tie beam beneath the ground level where the depth exceeded more than 15 feet. M25 grade concrete was used for the construction. Hundreds of labour and a number of machineries were involved to expedite the construction. Several site engineers were employed to oversee the construction and ensure quality control of the works being carried out.
